Gunnison City’s Airport, located 9 miles south of town on Highway 89 located on 610 acres. In 1947, Gunnison and Salina Cities built a runway on an un-obstructed plain located between the two cities. The mutually-owned municipal airport is operational 24 hours per day. It has one asphalt paved runway designated 2/20 which measures 3,855 by 60 feet. The airport is also equipped with radio controlled lights, a spacious ramp with tie-downs, and five hangars for local aviation enthusiasts. The airport had approximately 3,280 aircraft operations in 2010, all of which were general aviation with 75% of those local and 25% transient. There are 7 aircraft based at the airport. Salina-Gunnison Airport (44U), is 5,159 feet above sea level, and unattended.
Major upgrades to the runway, lighting, beacon, ramps, and tarmac were accomplished in the early 1990’s through a State Aviation grant. A 5-year master plan to extend the runway and provide amenities and basic services is in process. For more information regarding the airport, please call Airport Manager Richard Nay, 435-979-9234.
